Pet emergencies and opening hours in Halifax
If your pet is hurt or very unwell, call us first at (902) 555-0142 so we can get ready. During opening hours we see urgent cases the same day.
Signs that can’t wait
Call straight away if you notice any of these. If you’re unsure, call anyway: we would much rather hear from you.
Any pet
- Trouble breathing, or pale or blue-grey gums
- Collapse, a seizure or sudden weakness
- Bleeding that won’t stop after five minutes of pressure
- Hit by a car or a fall, even if they seem fine
Dogs
- A swollen belly with retching and nothing coming up
- Ate chocolate, grapes, xylitol gum or antifreeze
- Heavy panting and wobbling on a hot day
Cats
- A male cat straining in the litter box with little or no urine
- Any contact with lilies, even the pollen
- Breathing with an open mouth
Rabbits
- No eating or droppings for 12 hours
- A sudden head tilt or rolling
- Sitting hunched and grinding the teeth
On the way to us
- Call ahead and tell us what happened and when.
- Bring the packet, or a photo of anything your pet ate.
- Cats and rabbits in a carrier, dogs on a short lead.
- Keep your pet warm and still. Never give human painkillers.
